I'VE GOT A CRUSH

So I seem to have a slight crush, OK I have been stalking a house featured on Hooked on Houses...

It's a 1910 Arts and Crafts style home in Austin, TX...

I am in love with all the moulding, the graphic pattern on the walls, the crisp clean whites against the rich wood tones...

The pops of color in the calm, neutral setting... (not to mention the chandeliers!)

And the dining room... Oh be still my heart (I don't know whats with all my mushy heart and love references, must be the Valentine effect!)

The beautiful farmhouse table with Lucite chairs, the crystal chandelier.. the statement it makes sitting prominently in the middle of the room... and lets talk about that wall color WOW!!  So not something that I would normally be drawn too, but something about it is just perfection!

You must head over to Hooked on Houses for all the before and after photos...and I strongly suggest you have a big cup of coffee and a comfy chair because you will be there a while ;)

BIRTHDAY BASH: THE DECORATIONS

Decorations...just what a little boy cares about at his first "kid" party right!  Of course there was a ton of fun, food and favors...it was awesome... but maybe, just maybe, some day, he will look back at pictures and appreciate the decorations?  Right...well at least I have this outlet to share my excitement over cupcakes!

My sister-in-law is an incredible pastry chef and made these adorable cupcakes for the soccer themed party!  Aren't they too cute to eat!!  Well maybe just one.. they are delish.. better than Sprinkles cupcakes... seriously.

My friend Leanne did the names on the party favors (she owns a lettering business called Stripes &  D-Signs.. I sure am lucky to know such talented people!)...I got the water bottles at the dollar store and had each kids name put on them, then we filled them with a little bouncy soccer ball, candy, a whistle, soccer "tattoos", a wrist band with a soccer ball sewn on it, and a thank you note I printed on scrapbooking paper (Also to let parents know the water bottles were not dishwasher safe).

The kids had a blast running around playing games on an indoor soccer field, especially since it is freezing here! The place we had the party at, Just For Kicks, was AWESOME!  My son plays on a little "team" there and they also host birthday parties.  So if you are in the Chicagoland area I HIGHLY recommend having a party here, the staff there are amazing, and went above and beyond to make the party extra special, the kids and parents are still talking about how much fun it was!

Just For Kicks

A couple days later, on his actual birthday (which he shares with his Dad too!) I did a little decorating around the house...

The chalkboard wall greets you as you come in the front door..

(although the hubs obviously isn't 4, his age at least starts with a 4, and he loves soccer too...this worked well for me this year!)

(BAD writing I know, but it was a last minute idea, and the little birthday boy can't read yet... and the big birthday boy can't complain, his handwriting is so small you would be squinting right now)

I thought the soccer balls added into the current mantel decor was perfect, my son not so much...he thought they were staying up there for good and he wouldn't be able to play with them again!  Daddy quickly reassured him nothing stays in the same spot for long around here ;)

FAUX FIREPLACE: A LONG OVERDUE TUTORIAL!

I have had quite a few requests for more details on the "faux" fireplace we built in our family room last year.  So here is a look back at how we built it with a few more details.. and some changes we have made to it since the last time I posted about it.

Basing the dimensions off of a "real" fireplace, we decided we wanted it to be 5ft. wide by 55 inches high.

We first removed the baseboards along the entire wall so we could build the fireplace "into" the wall.  Then went up the 1x10 unfinished pine boards creating the "frame". On top of the 10 in boards are1x8 boards to give it depth and again creating the illusion that it is built into the wall.

(sorry I don't have more detailed pictures!)

Once the frame was completed the mantel was created using two 1x10 boards nailed together.  This gives the mantel a more substantial look.  To disguise that it is two boards, all three sides are finished with moulding.  The corbels were purchased at Home Depot and are 9in by 7in.

Inside the "fireplace" is a piece of wainscoting cut to fit snugly into the frame.

The baseboards were cut out where the new fireplace frame is, and put back up including the part where the wainscoting is (I hope that makes sense!?)

It turned out better than I had hoped, and was decorated season after season (OK, it really only lasted a couple months until I decided it needed more!) ...

And so began the framing for the top of the "fireplace"...

The frame was made with three 1x4's and the detail with 1in. square moulding.

It lived like that for a bit longer than the first round...

Until I got the itch to make a change AGAIN...

The wainscoting was given a couple coats of matte black paint and I am loving it... for now ;)

WANTED: A LITTLE LIGHT HELP

Alright, I need your help.  We are in need of a light for above our new farmhouse style kitchen table (which I will share the tutorial with you soon).  It needs to be rectangular, and I want it to have a bit of glam to it...I am slightly obsessed with this Jonathan Adler light....

The perfect chandelier for a rectangular dining table

but with a price tag starting at $1000 I don't think, no.. I KNOW my husband would never go for it... and quite honestly I couldn't bring myself to spend that on a light considering how often I change things! (that one's for you Dad ;)

SO, here is where you all come in...I have been searching high and low for a good knock off version

Have you seen one?
Have you made one?
Do you have one you want to sell me!

My second choice was this glass link chandelier from West Elm...

Chandelier for over the dining table.

Pretty right... NOPE, DISCONTINUED!  AHHHHH....

So back to the drawing board.  I have always liked this one from Pottery Barn, and a better price at $450...

Beautiful

until  I found this one...

Crystal Glass Drop 3-light Matte Silver Chandelier

at Overstock for only $169!

But really...I really, like really... want this one (sigh)
