FAUX FIREPLACE: A LONG OVERDUE TUTORIAL!

I have had quite a few requests for more details on the "faux" fireplace we built in our family room last year.  So here is a look back at how we built it with a few more details.. and some changes we have made to it since the last time I posted about it.

Basing the dimensions off of a "real" fireplace, we decided we wanted it to be 5ft. wide by 55 inches high.

We first removed the baseboards along the entire wall so we could build the fireplace "into" the wall.  Then went up the 1x10 unfinished pine boards creating the "frame". On top of the 10 in boards are1x8 boards to give it depth and again creating the illusion that it is built into the wall.

(sorry I don't have more detailed pictures!)

Once the frame was completed the mantel was created using two 1x10 boards nailed together.  This gives the mantel a more substantial look.  To disguise that it is two boards, all three sides are finished with moulding.  The corbels were purchased at Home Depot and are 9in by 7in.

Inside the "fireplace" is a piece of wainscoting cut to fit snugly into the frame.

The baseboards were cut out where the new fireplace frame is, and put back up including the part where the wainscoting is (I hope that makes sense!?)

It turned out better than I had hoped, and was decorated season after season (OK, it really only lasted a couple months until I decided it needed more!) ...

And so began the framing for the top of the "fireplace"...

The frame was made with three 1x4's and the detail with 1in. square moulding.

It lived like that for a bit longer than the first round...

Until I got the itch to make a change AGAIN...

The wainscoting was given a couple coats of matte black paint and I am loving it... for now ;)

  2. Love! I'd love a faux fireplace to decorate, BUT we have real working wood burners... ;) Which is what we only heat with. I do like the stone we have behind them, I just can't decorate them.:(
